Petfood Forum recently spoke with Erica Laird, research and development manager, Freshpet. Erica was selected as a First For Forum Ambassador for the 2026 event.

First For Forum offers pet food professionals who have never attended in the past a chance to attend the show at no cost. Ambassadors are selected through a nomination process.

We are pleased to welcome Erica to Petfood Forum on April 27-29, 2026, in Kansas City, Missouri.


What are you looking forward to the most at Petfood Forum?

Erica: I’m excited to see all the trends and innovations happening in the industry and to see what Petfood Forum is all about after hearing about it for so many years.

What are you hoping to accomplish at Petfood Forum?

Erica: I’d love to spark some new ideas for innovation and see how AI is being used to streamline work across different platforms.

Which exhibitors are  you looking forward to visiting?

Erica: I don’t have a specific exhibitor in mind that I am looking most forward to see, but I am more so interested in seeing the changes in trends and technologies since I started in the industry.

Which educational sessions are you looking forward to?

Erica: I am very interested in attending Leveraging AI to predict pet food palatability; Integrating recipe, analytical and pet data; and From table to bowl: How pet owners’ eating habits influence what they feed their pets.

Are you planning to do anything fun while you’re in Kansas City?

Erica: This will be my first time in Kansas City, I am excited to try some BBQ!

About Erica:

Erica Laird graduated from Saint Elizabeth University with a degree in Foods and Nutrition and a minor in Chemistry. After completing her studies, she began her career as an intern in the research & development department at Freshpet, where she has now been for nine years.

During her time at Freshpet, Erica has been heavily involved in new product development and product testing. She has progressed from a product development scientist to her current role as an R&D manager, continuing to drive innovation within the company. At home, her biggest fans, her dog and cat, are enthusiastic supporters of her work.
