Pet Food Institute communications director relies on Petfood Forum to meet industry partners

Petfood Forum recently sat down with Mary Emma Young, senior director of communications and strategic planning at Pet Food Institute, to learn about her educational and face-to-face networking experiences during the annual event.

Petfood Forum: What is your earliest memory of Petfood Forum?

Young: I was fortunate to be able to attend Petfood Forum just a few months into my career transition into the pet food industry. While I had recently joined the Pet Food Institute (PFI) as the director of communications, the networking opportunities and informative sessions at Petfood Forum helped give me a stronger understanding of the landscape and key organizations within the pet food sector. I was able to walk the floors of the exhibitor hall and meet with member companies, see their great sales teams in action, and sit in on various conference sessions. The learnings and exposure assisted in my career transition.

Petfood Forum: What do you consider the biggest challenge or opportunity ahead for the pet food industry?

Young: Pets have increasingly become beloved members of the family over the last 20 years, and the pet food industry has responded admirably in meeting the needs of pet owners and helping create a bonding opportunity at every mealtime. As manufacturers keep their fingers on the pulse of consumer demand, there’s been continuous innovation in product type, formulations and packaging. There is so much opportunity in the future for the pet food industry to further evolve while maintaining a core focus and dedication to the nutrition of the pets we all care about so much.

Petfood Forum: Why do you continue to attend Petfood Forum, and why should pet food industry professionals join us?

Young: Thanks to Petfood Forum, I’m able to meet with important industry partners and have a day full of networking. Not only do professionals gain important facetime, hallway meetings and conversations, but anyone new or looking to learn more can benefit from the educational sessions, as well.

Petfood Forum: What’s your recommendation for Kansas City fun during Petfood Forum in May?

Young: I’d hate to visit Kansas City and miss out on any of that famous KC barbecue!
