AAFCO pet food label modernization: what’s ahead? – David Dzanis, DVM, Ph.D., DACVN, CEO of Regulatory Discretion Inc., provides information on contemplated changes to the AAFCO Model Pet Food Regulations and discusses the potential impact of these changes on the labeling of all pet foods distributed in the U.S. Significant changes in the way nutrient content information is presented, new “front-of-pack” nutritional adequacy graphics, mandatory safe handling verbiage and changes to the ingredient declaration are being considered. While nothing is final to date, it behooves the pet food industry to keep abreast of these developments.

Dzanis is a board-certified veterinary nutritionist and CEO of Regulatory Discretion Inc., a consulting company for the pet food and related industries in matters relating to nutrition, ingredients, labeling and regulation. He is a diplomate and past-chair of the American College of Veterinary Nutrition, a past president of the American Academy of Veterinary Nutrition and was a member of two National Research Council committees on dog, cat and horse nutrition. Dzanis is an adjunct professor in the Regulatory Science Program at the USC School of Pharmacy, and he writes a monthly column on regulatory and other issues for Petfood Industry.
