Updates on the pet food regulatory process — Dana Brooks, president and CEO of the Pet Food Institute (PFI), explains how the current approval process for pet food ingredients is unnecessarily long and complicated. Along with a panel of experts, she explores today’s state of affairs and discusses what the industry can do to improve the process. Panelists include Liz Koutsos, Ph.D., president of EnviroFlight, and Loretta Hunter of Nestle Purina PetCare.

Experience:

Liz Koutsos, Ph.D., is president of EnviroFlight, a brand of Darling Ingredients, pioneering the commercialization of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) for feed and food applications; EnviroFlight opened its first commercial-scale BSFL production facility in the US in 2019. Prior to EnviroFlight, she was director of Mazuri Exotic Animal Nutrition, a Land O’Lakes/Purina Mills division. Koutsos joined Mazuri following an appointment on the faculty of the Animal Science Department at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park, with a bachelor of science in animal science, and the University of California, Davis, with a master of science and Ph.D. in nutrition and immunology. Koutsos is currently an adjunct professor in the Department of Animal Sciences at North Carolina State University and a Smithsonian Research Associate.
