Animal nutrition consultant relies on Petfood Forum for education and networking

Petfood Forum recently spoke with Randall Johnson, Ph.D., PAS, animal nutrition consultant, to learn about his educational and networking experiences during the annual event.

Petfood Forum: What is your earliest memory of Petfood Forum, and what role did you have in the industry at that point?

Johnson: The first Petfood Forum included a little more than a couple dozen speakers and many folding table exhibitors along a hallway and small meeting room at a hotel in Rosemont, Illinois. Now it has grown into a major international event for the companion animal industry. At the time I was developing and providing computer formulation and accounting systems for the animal and pet industry.

Petfood Forum: What do you consider the biggest challenge or opportunity ahead for the pet food industry?

Johnson: The biggest challenge that I see is keeping the confidence of the pet owner family. Our industry has and will always put the priority and best interest in the health and welfare of the pet and its owner first. During times of pandemic and repeated recalls, it is challenging to get the message out to the consumers that we really care and work hard to give them the best and safest products possible.

Petfood Forum: Why do you continue to attend Petfood Forum, and why should pet food industry professionals join us?

Johnson: Where else can you go in this industry to listen to top scientists, veterinarians, marketing professionals and others related to what we do in one meeting? I go to learn, meet new people, see new ideas and renew old friendships.

Petfood Forum: What’s your recommendation for Kansas City fun during Petfood Forum in May?

Johnson: I used to live in Kansas City many years ago; there is a lot of history here, and Kansas City has some great museums. Going to see a Royals baseball game is a great time. Getting to eat some K.C. Barbeque is a must. And going down to the Plaza district you can always find some spots for shopping, entertainment and eating.
