Including beta-glucans in the diet leads to benefits in the metabolism of obese dogs – Marcio Brunetto, DVM, PhD, professor at the University of São Paulo, shares results of a study on the effects of adding 0.1% of beta-glucans to the diet on metabolic parameters and satiety in obese dogs. Obesity is considered the most common nutritional disorder today, and it has been linked with changes in glucose homeostasis and often to insulin resistance. Studies in rats and people show that beta-glucans enhances insulin sensitivity and glucose tolerance, as well as satiety, yet little research on its effects in dogs has been available, until now.

Brunetto earned a veterinary degree at the State University of Santa Catarina in Florianopolis, Brazil. Following completion of a residency program in nutrition and clinical nutrition at São Paulo State University, Jaboticabal, in São Paulo, he earned a master’s degree and a doctorate in veterinary medicine (clinical nutrition) from the same university. Today Brunetto is a professor at the University of São Paulo in São Paulo and Pirassununga, Brazil. He has presented more than 300 lectures, especially in Latin America and also in the US, England, Germany and Spain.
